In front of the funeral chapel at Niendorf Cemetery, Hamburg
A static, dance-like moment between holding on and letting go: two figures stand closely intertwined, yet each separate: the one in front opens towards the future, the one behind provides support and holds back: a pas de deux that makes separation legible as a transition. The treatment of the material sharpens this meaning. A very rough and brittle-looking surface – especially on the figure in the back – depicts experiences of loss and vulnerability. Light gathers in the indentations as if the bronze itself were storing these memories. This contrasts with the calmer figure in front. Its arm position marking a corridor of hope. At this liminal space in front of the funeral chapel of the New Niendorf Cemetery in Hamburg, Jared Bartz’s commissioned work clearly positions itself within the choreography of loss and hope. The group marks the path into the ritual of farewell and simultaneously points outwards, towards the reconnection with life. Thus, farewell combines the expressive figuration of a commemorative tradition with a contemporary, relational gesture – loss and hope in a single, silent dance step.

Ein statisch – tänzerischer Moment zwischen Halten und Loslassen: zwei Figuren stehen in enger Verschränkung, und doch jede für sich: die vordere öffnet sich in Richtung Zukunft, die hintere bildet den Gegenhalt und hält zurück: ein „pas de deux“, der Trennung als Übergang lesbar macht. Die Materialbehandlung schärft diese Semantik. Die bewusst sehr grobe, teils brüchig wirkende Oberfläche, besonders an der hinteren Figur, zeichnet Erfahrungen von Verlust und Verletzlichkeit. Licht sammelt sich in den Vertiefungen, als würde die Bronze selbst diese Erinnerungen speichern. Dem steht die ruhigere Frontfigur gegenüber, ihre Armhaltung markiert einen Korridor der Hoffnung. Am Schwellenort vor der Trauerkapelle des Neuen Niendorfer Friedhofs Hamburg positioniert sich die Auftragsarbeit von Jared Bartz klar in der Choreografie von Verlust und Zuversicht. Die Gruppe markiert den Weg hinein in das Ritual des Abschieds und weist zugleich hinaus, in die Rückbindung an das Leben. So verbindet Abschied die expressive Figuration einer erinnerungskulturellen Tradition mit einer zeitgenössischen, relationalen Geste – Verlust und Hoffnung in einem einzigen, still gehaltenen Tanzschritt.
